On World Tiger Day 2026 (July 29, 2026), official indicators and field survey data confirm that Madhya Pradesh (MP) stil retain its title as India’s “Tiger State” in the 2026 All-India Tiger Estimation with ~1,100 tigers (up from 785 in 2022, marking a 41.4% increase).

An Estimated Leopard Population expected to cross 4,500.
Bhopal Forest Division Growth: From few almost 0 tigers in 2006* to over 30 resident tigers in 2026.
The State of MP is covering around 77,000 sq. km.of total forest area with
9 Tiger Reserves, 11 National Parks, 25 Wildlife Sanctuaries,

Whereas, year 2026 projected tiger numbers is ~1,100 with expected growth to 40%, according to Forest department sources.
Increase of tiger numbers in Non-Protected Forests is a positive sign of a good tiger and habitat management.
Camera trap surveys conducted beyond protected reserves into non-protected territorial forest and revenue lands shows a positive increase in the tiger numbers.
Bhopal Division Transformation: In 2006, Bhopal had almost zero resident tigers. Now, in 2026, the division holds *over 30 resident tigers are reported including breeding tigresses with 3 cubs in the Kerwa-Kaliasot area.
